Driven by the value of simple handwritten notes amidst busy days, the Pocket Journal was devised as an intrinsically useful book - small and familiar, held easily in the hand, ready for writing.

The Pocket Journal is a seamless combination of a Saddler & Co leather cover with a specially tailored paper book insert. This has been custom designed and handcrafted in the artisan tradition.

While the Saddler & Co artisans crafted the leather covers in our Dubbo workshop, the Pocket book has been traditionally made by Christopher Jolly, our quality officer for the year 2021, and also a fellow artisan and notebook-maker.

Our creative director, Jemima, and Chris found commonality in the sensation of handwriting as a treasured moment amidst nomadic activities, when ideas are often at their best. Drawing on Chris’ background as a notebook maker, they began testing papers for a pocket book, custom made to fit within a Saddler and Co leather cover. The resulting Pocket Journal collaboration reflects a certain delight in handmade, everyday objects that are useful, as well as enriching and tactile.

We trust the Pocket Journal release is a return to the joy of handwriting, quality paper, and the way leather responds to life.

Specifications:

Each book nods to the traditions of bookbinding, using the hand-sewn pamphlet binding with waxed linen thread. It can act as a stand-alone insert, easily pocketed, or can be paired with a passport on the other side of the cover.

Featuring a versatile 90 gsm cream paper which takes well to pens, pencils, and fountain pens. The cover of recycled card is folded at the fore-edge, adding durability and a closure for the ‘cunning pouch’ at the back of the book - an ideal spot for storing small loose papers or money notes.

The Pocket Journal will accommodate both the pocket book insert and also store a Passport.
Designed to be used as a stand alone object, or to be carried within pockets. You can also store the Pocket Journal in the front pocket of our Laptop Cases.
The Pocket Journal can be stored in the zippered compartment of the Classic tote bag. It will easily fit within the Classic or Daily clutch sizes.

Each hide of leather has its own characteristic markings and tone, and thus each one of our leather goods will be unique and individual.  We've selected and graded this leather for its strength and ability to remain supple with a little care and leather conditioner. Every item is uniquely designed, prepared, cut, sewn, finished, and packaged in-house by our dedicated team. We source only the finest leathers, and grade them in house for each product.

As a brand we value supporting local businesses and other makers. Most of packaging, including boxes & print material, is made in Australia and completely recyclable.

The Saddler & Co range is limited in nature, made in small batches at a time. If your preferred item has sold out and specifies "PRE-ORDER" this means there will be a lead time on your order. A pre-order product will be scheduled for our next production run and we will update you on the approximate completion date.
